Our Bubbling Bowls for Turtles, now called
Turtle Ponds, are designed so that a tortoise can easily get in and out of the
water safely even when very small. Because we have found that many of these
ponds have also been purchased for smallish snakes (no six-foot pythons,
please), it seemed appropriate to include "snakes" in the title for
this page.
Margie's daughter's snake,
Edward, a five-foot albino black rat snake:

Lights and Reflections, Edward and Bubbling
Pond.
The bubbling bowl shown below gives a
clear
picture of how a Turtle Pond is constructed. One side is
rather steep (to the right) and the other side is lower and has a more gradual
slope so the turtles can easily climb out. As the bowl is set into the substrate, the steep side is usually
toward the back of the cage with the beach toward the front or more open area. Also, the bubbler is set deep so that it will work even if the
water level is kept shallow when your turtles are young and small.

The poor little tortoise shown below, named Calsie, was
fed nothing but lettuce for over a year. Her shell and beak became soft and
deformed and she was almost dead before she was rescued. Please be very
careful to provide any pet with the proper care and diet. Its life
depends on it!
This Bubbling Turtle Pond, made
especially for Calsie years ago, has a beach and gradually sloped sides for easy
access and egress. The small food dish in the left foreground is one of
our Delectabowls.

This is Calsie today, six years later and about
three inches longer. Her carapace and beak are almost normal now and she loves
her home with its cave, its exercise yard and its pond. A special
summer treat is having Margie leave the door open at night letting in moths that
are attracted by the light. The moths fall into the pond and Calsie has a great
time swimming around catching and eating them.

A note of interest: When Margie takes Calsie outside
for sunshine and to enjoy a beautiful day, Calsie immediately "speeds"
back to the house, not even stopping her run as she turns her head toward
Margie, clearly to express her disgust and disapproval of being removed from her
home. She's even managed to climb the step leading to the door.
